How to avoid alcohol related risks |
|
|
|
Some strategies- Plan ahead. It is more difficult to plan how to get home once you have had alcohol to drink – remember, your judgement will be impaired. So work out your travel arrangements before you start drinking;
- Share a taxi with friends;
- Take public transport;
- Organise with a friend to take turns driving. You and your friend will need to agree not to drink when driving – such as ‘Des’Driver;
- Organise to stay the night;
- Arrange to be picked up by a relative or friend who hasn’t been drinking.
Walking- This should generally be avoided, as more than half of all pedestrians killed are affected by alcohol. However, if you must walk:
- Always use crossing facilities and obey traffic signals;
- Wear bright clothing;
- Walk with a group of friends;
- Keep to areas that are well lit;
- Do not take unnecessary risks as perception and reaction times are affected.
Passengers- Never ride with a person that you know is above their legal limit or that you do not trust after drinking alcohol;
- Persuade the driver to talk alternative transport;
- Disable the vehicle, hide the keys or call the police;
- Refuse the ride and seek sensible alternatives
